Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University, a public research university in Long Island, New York, competed to become the anchor institution for a world-leading climate solutions center to be developed on Governors Island. This prestigious opportunity had three other finalist universities vying for the role, making it essential for Stony Brook to present the most engaging and persuasive proposal to the selection board.

With my team at Sullivan, I was tasked with leading the creation of a compelling proposal concept that would convey Stony Brook’s innovative ideas and differentiate them from their competitors. The proposal concept provided visual and verbal direction, and then we created a content strategy, refined their content, and created an interactive experience to make the proposal stand out. Additionally, I managed the project, coordinated stakeholders, and ensured all content was implemented on time, all while adhering to a strict proposal deadline.

We began with in-depth primary and secondary research to understand the specific requirements of the proposal, identify what set Stony Brook apart from its competitors, and analyze its existing brand positioning. This research informed our approach as we developed the campaign concept. The concept, The New York Visionaries, revolved around playing up SBU’s New York heritage and its prominent footprint throughout the state, making it easy for them to influence and guide climate change in their communities, in broader New York, and the world. We enhanced the proposal’s visual and verbal elements to create a more engaging and interactive experience, ensuring that Stony Brook’s brilliance was communicated effectively. Given the high stakes of this initiative, I took charge of project management, coordinating with multiple authors and teams, streamlining communication, and keeping everyone on track to meet the critical deadline.

The outcome was a resounding success. Stony Brook University won the proposal and became the anchor institution for what is now known as the “New York Climate Exchange,” a $700 million campus dedicated to finding solutions to the global climate crisis. The proposal we delivered not only helped secure this prestigious role but also positioned Stony Brook as a leading force in climate innovation.
